Christmas Lights Special

Please forgive if the title of this post appears misleading, what began as a hunt for an apt Christmas picture became an illumination distraction due to the work of photographers such as below. Taken by Flickr user Gen Kanai of the Tokyo Millenario:

Tokyo Millenario lights

It has lights, I'm showing it at Christmas time, therefore this post must work.
Incidentally, from the same source, for anime fans who are Akira au fait you can look at this reproduction of Kaneda's motorcycle.

Stranger A Day

This is Greyscale Wednesday; A photographic wander through the quotidian masses provides delectable subject material at the Stranger A Day gallery.

What fascinating little lives we all lead. Have a good day.

Without Sanctuary Revisted

"A black teenager wearing a white shirt, ragged pants and no shoes stares blindly at the sky. His head is tilted up towards the tree limb from which he has been hanged. His name was Lige Daniels and he was lynched in Center, Texas on August 3, 1920. On the basis of allegations that he had killed an elderly white woman, about a thousand men battered down a jail door and hauled the youth off to an oak tree."

"Lige Daniels hangs about six feet in the air. Beneath him are a mass of white men, many looking at the camera and smiling. The camera catches one boy, possibly twelve or thirteen years old, looking up at the lynched sixteen year-old. His smile and glee at the scene are clear."

Previously I posted regarding Without Sanctuary, the moving exhibit of mob (in)justice. Bad Subjects presents an in-dept analysis of the book written on this topic.

It's Only Ordinary Because It's There

Label me excessively schmaltzy if you must, I just couldn't help but enjoy the emotional nursing of It's Only Ordinary Because It's There:

It's an instant cheer-up. I'd consider it a celebration of having someone you can send such regards to.

Possum Living

"Do you want to get out of the rat race but not drop out? Do you want to live a life of leisure without worry or guilt? If your answer is yes, Dolly Freed will show you how to live well without a job and without working very hard."

"After discussing reasons why you should or shouldn't give up your job, Possum Living gives you details about the cheapest ways with the best results to buy and maintain your own home, dress well, cope with the law, stay healthy, and keep up a middle-class facade--whether you live in the city, in the suburbs, or in a small town."

A site I've come back to for repeat reads several times now (although I'm not yet ready to give up work alas), enjoy Possum Living.

The Tallest Bridge In The World

"The Millau bridge over the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains is more than 300m (984ft) high"

"Like Concorde and the Channel Tunnel, the bridge is Franco-British". The masterpiece is designed by Norman Foster, with the enormous capital supplied by French constructors Eiffage.

Norman Foster was quoted as saying, "A work of man must fuse with nature. The pillars had to look almost organic, like they had grown from the earth".

A New World Union (Mercosur & Andean)

"Representatives from 12 South American countries have signed an agreement to create a political and economic bloc modelled on the European Union. The new South American Community of Nations was launched at a summit in the Peruvian city of Cuzco."

"Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo, said a new country was being born, which would one day have a common currency, parliament and passport."

The South American Community of Nations combines two unions, Mercosur & Andean (CAN), with various levels of part/dual commitment in-between. I noticed none of the online sources I've encountered provide a suitable map showing nations involved and their previous/present status. I have quickly put together this crude example:

Mercosur (Blue) : Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay & Uruguay
Associate Mercosur (Light Blue) : Chile
Andean (Red) : Colombia, Venezuela & Ecuador
Andean & Associate Mercosur (Purple) : Bolivia & Peru

Guyana and Suriname were previously without union and are members of this new community.

Part Cockney, Part West Country

Mrs Roberts discovered she had a British accent after her voice recovered following a stroke.

Four years on, she still struggles to convince people that she has lived all her life in America. "People in America accuse me of lying when I say I was born in Indiana. They would say 'What are you saying that for? Where in England are you from?'

"Her accent is a mixture of English cockney and West Country."

Found via: BBC News UK Edition

The poor lady's "English Accent" reminds me of my girlfriend's attempts; Hearing it meander from region to region, no consistency between any two adjoining sentences. My American accent, on the other hand, is superb. Few would suggest it critically flawed by my inability to mimic beyond "My paynts! my paynts are on fyy-er!"

Ukraine Revolution

"The British government does not believe the presidential election held in Ukraine on Nov. 21 was free or fair", Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said, Nov. 29.

"Speaking in the House of Commons, Straw said Britain was urging all parties in the dispute over the Ukraine election result to continue to show restraint."

View at the Ukraine Revolution blog, a multitude of near-live photography depicting the ongoing tensions and events.

Some events are obviously not quite as tense as others.

The Missing Picture

Reposted is the stolen entry for today's Greyscale Wednesday:

All aspects of the entry are missing besides the image itself, this was due to an unfortunate bug with the web software used.

Before It Happens To You

The informative and inspirational ChangeThis have posted a reminder of some of their past articles you may have missed. One of note is Before It Happens To You written by Jonathan Sackner Bernstein, M.D:

"Every single one of us is at risk of heart attack and disease, and a simple daily regimen can help stave off such heart problems", "The hidden signs of heart problems begin in your 20s, and Dr. Sackner-Bernstein's findings and advice are helping people live longer, healthier lives. Find out how."
