Modern Wonder 1: Channel Tunnel

...or for our small French contingent "le tunnel sous la Manche". It's the first of our Seven Modern Wonders.

Since 1802 engineers planned this 50 kilometre tunnel connecting France with the United Kingdom. In 1990 it was just about finished (and has since been extended).

Today you can get between the two countries inside an hour (Ashford to Lille), or from London to Paris in under three hours.
